ol doinyo lengai

Mount Oldoinyo Lengai | The Mountain of God.

Oldoinyo Lengai is a symmetrical active strato volcano that arose majestically in the heart of the Maasai Land about 2000m within the East African Rift Valley depression to a summit elevation of 2878m (9650ft); Oldoinyo Lengai,” The Mountain Of God”, is the only active volcano in the world that erupts with the natrocarbonatite lava flow and the highly fluid lava that contains almost no silicon. It is also the only active volcano in this part of the Rift Valley, though there are many older extinct volcanoes in this region.

Looking north from its summit crater the hot barren salt flats of Lake Natron stretch into the distance. To the south stretch the Crater Highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The eastern horizon is dominated by Kilimanjaro and to the west the forested escarpments and hills comprising the western slopes of the Rift Valley.

The Mountain is ideal for adventurous travelers who like to explore those unique areas in the world, such as photographers, trekkers and volcano lovers. Nevertheless Oldoinyo Lengai is considered to be extremely hazardous and that safety cannot be assured. Trekking takes 1 day; though descending is tough’ it is always done in combination with the Safari to the great Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater tour.
